Google Plus is struggling. A Google engineer accidentally released info saying that the site was a “study in short-term thinking” and a “knee-jerk reaction”. This has caused a significant drop in Google Plus members and is not good for the site. Google Plus is essentially an attempt to capitalize off of Facebook’s success. However, it has been the exact opposite. The site was released in June and has almost hit rock-bottom.
What does this mean for social media? It means that others are trying to capitalize off the success of already popular social media. We will always see new sites go up that essentially provide the same service. The “original” social media sites need to be aware because they need to keep their sites up to date. They need to keep users pleased and give them reasons to stay around. Adaptation is the key word. Sites need to adapt their original ideas and intentions to fit some of the requests of the users. Usually the user has no say in how the site should be adapted, but it would be something to look at. Then again, who am I to say?
Users need to be aware of this because something better may come along. We must be conscious of the other social media sites being implemented or we might miss out. Let us broaden our horizons and take a look at different Web 2.0. Other sites may be suited to our specific needs. Web 2.0 is an extremely large market and keeps expanding. Don’t be afraid to research other options! Don’t be afraid to browse around!
This also means that you could be the next innovator. We are all experts in social media and know what we like about it and what we don’t. Don’t be afraid to express your ideas and expand on them. Google Plus tried an idea and it didn’t work, but I’m sure it won’t stop them. Don’t let failure stop you in your tracks. Anyone of us can be the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. It all starts with an idea! Even just one YouTube video can make someone revenue beyond their wildest beliefs. The use of social media can possibly be used to get ahead. It is an outlet and possible money maker, so don’t be afraid to express yourself!
Dillian... so.. I will agree that Google plus may not have been the hit that individuals imagined it would be, but it still is a success. Whenever a social media site has millions of followers, it is a success. I don't think that it will oust Facebook either. I think are are right in regards to Web 2.0. There are tremendous opportunities out there. You are exactly right when you said that YouTube can make you fortunes. The challenge is to see the future and to create it! I think sites like living social are going to be huge in the coming years.
ReplyDeleteSocial media is continually expanding and changing. That is one of the most compelling reasons for social media's popularity. People are becoming entrepeneurs based on a video on YouTube or designing their own Web 2.0 tool. Updating the information is key to the success of any social media site. Look at Facebook. From its conception, the developers knew that keeping it current was going to make it successful or not. Facebook has seen many changes recently. This is in response to the demands of the people wanting different aspects of this social media tool. What a terrific post!
ReplyDeleteVery intriguing Dillan. I guess I wasn't listening to all the news about Google+, just that some people were satisfied and some not. But isn't that how Facebook started too? Some people really liked Facebook and the whole idea of it, and some were very skeptical to get on board. What made Facebook successful is that it kept pushing on and trying new things. Hence, they have formed into a multimillion dollar corporation. However, your statement that anyone could be the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg is absolutely true. Fame and success are waiting for any individual who puts together an amazing service. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI think if a web 2.0 tool is to become popular it needs to find the people and not the people finding it. Meaning once a tool is born and it catches on, its all up to people to help promote it. If it is a good tool, people will use it and they will tell their friends and they will tell their friends and so on. There are probably some great tools out there, I guess at least right now I don't have time to find them.
ReplyDeleteI myself am not a judge of how social media networks will do since i do not "jump aboard" until someone forces me too. Someone made me make a Myspace and someone else forced me on FB. I am always the last person of my friends onto these networking sites. But in my humble opinion with FB being as popular as it is and with twitter on its heels if Google+ was gunna make something that was going to outdo the two sites it would have already taken over already I feel like it is one in the same with FB (even though i have never been on google+) because if it was different it would have launched already.
