Facebook plans to turn its globally famous site into a site of all trades. It has started by releasing talks about interfacing Facebook with music. It wouldn’t stream the music online, but rather use outside sources to launch the music. Let it be clear that Facebook would become a platform for music and not a server that contains music.
Facebook is headed in the right direction. They are expanding their general idea into something more for the user. Rather than going to Youtube or other music sites, Facebook is saying why not listen here. One is already using it to interact with friends, family and peers so why not use it to listen to music as well. Essentially this would turn it into a Wal-Mart. Not only can you get your groceries there, but hey, you can get your toothpaste and toothbrush too. Our society is turning into a one-stop shop (http://www.orlando-florida-local.com/walmartsupercenter.html). We don’t want to stop different places to pick up different things. If we can get everything at one stop then count us in. Time is money and is very valuable to everyone so Facebook is ingenious.
If one can interact online while listening to music in just one browser they are probably inclined to use it more frequently. Facebook has the right idea of innovation. They have a concrete site to start with and are looking for ways to expand it. Once the technology is created, developers seem to look for new ways and improvements to keep the site exciting and current! Whatever they can bring to the table to keep users there is a win for Facebook developers. The first sentence within #4 on the website below explains my reasoning.
Sure, it may not be in the same context as to what I am speaking about, but the analogy/saying can be used the same. The site explains that once technology is in place that new technology must be presented. Facebook is doing this exactly. They have the technology in place and are presenting new technology to the table for future gain and expansion. Facebook is essentially becoming Wal-Mart. Kudos to them for their innovative planning!
Dillan,
ReplyDeleteFirst, I agree with your original thoughts. The idea that we, as a society, want a one-stop shop is relevant. People are looking to save time, save money (live better?), so these convenient locations are perfect. Walmart expanded due to its ability to sell everything. In this regard, Facebook is performing similiarly to Walmart.
However, I do not agree with Facebook’s idea. Why do small businesses die out in cities where Walmart is present? They cannot keep up with the economy. It’s all about supply and demand; people demand a bulk supply and Walmart can live up to this demand. With Facebook incorporating these various services, which website will die out first? It’s a dangerous cycle. I think Facebook needs to stick to what they do well –connecting all people at the push of a button.
Great post, Dillan. Very nice thoughts.

Finally one person that agrees with me about innovation. Why are so many people so against successful companies. To me it makes no sense. Now if that company is taking advantage of their customers and charging them when they shouldn't be etc then they should not be where they are and that would be wrong, but what about companies like Facebook? Facebook was a great idea that went viral and now they are a huge company. They should be praised for their innovation and hard work. Also I think it is great that they are branching out into other ventures to help grow their company.

I have mixed thoughts on this. I do understand why Facebook would want to do this, but I don't know if I like the idea. I think I agree with with Kyle when he says that small companies die out because of things like this happening.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time, why should Facebook sit back and watch all these other companies make money when they can offer the same services.
So, I guess I will just stay neutral on this for now. Great posts everyone!
I haven't heard about this! I think it is a great idea. I love it when companies branch out into more flexible ideas, giving more to the consumer. I am excited for this to roll out! I agree with the thought of Simon...I am not sure if people begin to target companies who are really growing because of fear of being consumed into the market, or if it is along the lines of frustration of their own success. I do have to wonder, though, about the "face" of these large companies. I think that perhaps people don't associate the face of the builder to these companies. I think many people forget where these large corporations and companies came from, which is a person's idea. That is why I think the movie about the founder of Facebook and the biography about Sam Walton were such wonderful market moves...because it reminds the public that these companies have a face.
